“He Has Helped Us Accelerate Our Development and Transformation Process.” Saudi Pro League CEO Omar Mugharbel Lauds Cristiano Ronaldo’s Role in the League’s Development
Saudi Pro League CEO Omar Mugharbel has lauded Cristiano Ronaldo for his significant impact on the SPL’s development. In comments made during a recent press conference, the SPL CEO noted that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s move to Al Nassr was a major moment in Saudi Arabian football.
Ronaldo, 39, opted to join Al Nassr after his romantic return to Manchester United failed to live up to expectations. Due to a falling out with manager Erik Ten Hag, Ronaldo famously aired out their issues in a publicized interview with British journalist and commentator Pier Morgan.
Having burnt his bridges, Ronaldo explored options away from Manchester, and Al Nassr came calling. The circumstances worked out for all parties. Ronaldo was keen to make a move and prove that he was still capable of delivering performances and the Saudi Pro League needed to raise the profile of the league and attract top talent.
Speaking on the move, Mugharbel noted, “There is no doubt that someone like Cristiano Ronaldo, probably one of the best players to ever play the game, has had a huge impact on and off the pitch in Saudi Arabia.”
Commenting on Cristiano’s impact on the SPL’s development, Mugharbel went on to say, “We believe that he has helped us accelerate our development and transformation process, opening the door for many other players to join the League, considering the Saudi League as a valid career opportunity for them.”
Since Ronaldo’s move to the SPL, the league has seen top talent follow him with notable players, including Karim Benzema, Sadio Mane, Neymar, N’Golo Kante, Ruben Neves, Ivan Toney, and many more. This has led to the level of competition intensifying, and as seen this summer, the SPL is now attracting players either approaching or in their prime. Early on, it was seen as a retirement league but as the SPL develops, it is increasingly becoming attractive to top talents globally, and one man started the revolution: Cristiano Ronaldo.
