Pif-Owned Newcastle Open to Saudi Pro League Offers for Kieran Trippier After Rejecting a £12.8 Million Bid From Bayern Munich in January
Newcastle are looking to entertain offers from Saudi Pro League sides for England international Kieran Trippier. The 33-year-old was the subject of £12.8 million bid from Bayern Munich in January, but Newcastle rejected it due to a lack of ready replacements in the market.
However, with the summer transfer window now open, the view at St James’ Park is that selling one of the club’s highest earners who is on a decline offers an opportunity to sign a young replacement at much lower wages.
Trippier is entering the final year of his contract, and Newcastle have shown no indications of extending his contract. Given that he’ll be turning 35 at the end of his contract, the club’s hierarchy will be keen not to tie themselves to a player past his prime. Consequently, this summer is the only opportunity to sell the England international, given that he’ll be free to engage in talks with other clubs in January with the goal of a free transfer next summer.
After turning down Bayern, Newcastle saw Trippier enter a period of bad form, which saw Tino Livramento preferred to start at right back. The club is owned by the Saudi PIF, which owns four clubs in the Saudi Pro League, making a Saudi move for the player simple.
At least two unnamed Saudi Pro League sides have made inquiries about Trippier, but no official bids have been placed yet. There is still time for formal talks to take place with the player left to decide on whether he wishes to join the Saudi Pro League.
