Karim Benzema Sends Mixed Signals As He Deletes Al Ittihad Images on Instagram After Reiterating His Commitment
In an interview with GQ Middle East, former Ballon d’Or winner, Karim Benzema, expressed his desire to continue playing the Saudi Pro League. He voiced his sentiments, noting that he was an ambassador to the league who would significantly impact other players’ desire to join the league.
Noting the significance of his playing in the Saudi Pro League, Benzema said, “It [being in Saudi] is a new challenge [and one] that I like – a long-term project and in a Muslim country,” he says. “I’m not only a football player here in Saudi Arabia, I’m also an ambassador. I’m here to bring great European players in, in the near future, even if there are already great ones in the Saudi league. Our challenge is to raise it to the same level of the European Leagues.”
However, a day after the article’s publication, Benzema’s Instagram page experienced a purge, with the player only leaving seven posts, none of them being associated with his current club, Al Ittihad. The move has left fans reeling, with some accusing him of being ungrateful and others dismissing the move as nothing significant. How things will turn out for him at Al Ittihad remains to be seen.
