Henderson Heading To Holland As He Reaches Agreement To Terminate Al Ettifaq Contract
Jordan Henderson will be moving to Europe after all. Despite the tax implication and the significant loss of wages, the former Liverpool captain seems set to end his Saudi Pro League adventure barely six months into his Al Ettifaq contract.
The Athletic reports that Al Ettifaq and Henderson are in the final stages of a contract termination settlement allowing him to move to Ajax for free. The former England captain has reportedly agreed on a deal with Ajax in principle and left Al Ettifaq’s winter camp to travel to the UK to finalize the deal.
After spending 12 years at Liverpool, the 33-year-old moved to Al Ettifaq after getting convinced by the project headed by another former Liverpool captain, Steven Gerrard. In his 6-month stay at Al Ettifaq, he played 17 times and assisted 4 goals. It has been a challenging season, with the team going over two months without a win and languishing in 8th position with 25 points, 28 points behind league leaders Al Hilal.
On the positive side, Henderson is the highest-paid player at Al Ettifaq, and his departure is bound to release a significant amount to allow Gerrard to sign replacements that can help them improve their form in the second half of the season.
