Ivan Toney Sends Warning Shots to Cristiano Ronaldo: “We’re Not Here to Idolise Them, We’re Here to Beat Them”
Al Ahli’s striker Ivan Toney is making his ambitions for the season known, with the former Brentford striker expressing his desire to lift the Golden Boot trophy at the end of the season. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award last season, and Toney is determined to put his best foot forward this season to claim it.
Al Ahli have not had the best start to the season, having only won thrice in eight outings. However, Ivan Toney is keen on turning the form around alongside his teammates, including Eduardo Mendy, Riyad Mahrez, and Roberto Firminho. Toney has only managed three goals in six appearances this season, and he’s hoping to continue adding to his tally.
Ahead of the Sea Derby against Al Ittihad, Toney spoke about his target for the season, noting that he hopes he can keep scoring goals and help Al Ahli win matches. Regarding Ronaldo, he said, “I don’t watch what other people are doing. Obviously, we know Ronaldo is a top player, but I’ll concentrate on myself and do what I can do best.” The England international continued to say, “It’s all good coming up against these players, but we’re not here to idolize them; we’re here to beat them.”
Toney has quite the way to go to match Ronaldo’s six goals this season, and he will need to be even more prolific to catch up with Al Hilal’s Aleksandar Mitrović, who has ten goals so far this season. Al Ahli are relying on Toney to bring in the goals and help them climb up the ranking from their current 8th position, and they will hope that he meets his goals this season.
