In Answering the ‘Very Simple’ Goat Question, Italian Legend Indicates Cristiano Ronaldo Is ‘Not a Genius’ Like Lionel Messi

Fabio Capello Prefers ‘Genius’ Lionel Messi Over Cristiano

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are typically viewed as eternal rivals. Their indisputable talents have rewritten the history books and boast countless records between them. Naturally, the football world has become involved in a never-ending debate about who is the greatest of all time (GOAT).

Italian legend Fabio Capello is the latest to join the heated debate. The former England national team manager decisively chose Messi over Ronaldo in the GOAT debate, separating the two players who have 13 Ballon d’Ors between them and countless entries into the history books.

When comparing the two world football icons, Capello was eager to indicate that Lionel Messi rises higher than the others.

At the Laureus World Sport, the former Juventus and Real Madrid manager said, “[Ronaldo] is a great player. He won titles, he won the Ballon d’Or, but as I said before, it’s not as great as how Messi has been. For me, if you talk to me about Cristiano Ronaldo or Messi, I will say Messi. Ronaldo is a great scorer, shoots, does everything, knows how to do everything, but he is not a genius. Very simple.”

Cristiano Ronaldo fans, who also played for Juventus, will certainly disagree with the legendary manager’s assessment. The debate will rage on as the two players are still going strong in 2024, with the Portuguese playing in the Saudi Pro League and the Argentinian at the Major League Soccer.
