Ajax Set to Offer Jordan Henderson European Escape After His Indication That He’s Not Settling Well At Al Ettifaq
With reports in England indicating that Jordan Henderson is looking to return home, some clubs have considered signing the former Liverpool captain. The 33-year-old expressly wanted a return to the English Premier League. However, due to profit and sustainability rules, most clubs have ruled themselves out of the race for his signature.
Top on the list was Newcastle, who are set to convene a transfer committee meeting this week. The PIF-owned club is missing Sandro Tonali (banned for gambling), Joelinton (recurring hamstring), and Joe Willock (ACL), who all play in the midfield area. However, given that Newcastle prefers doing business in the summer, they will have to look for creative solutions that do not compromise their FFP position. That effectively rules them out of the race for Henderson’s signature.
Ajax has shown concrete interest in the English midfielder and would offer a European solution should he be open to widening the scope beyond the English Premier League. Currently languishing in 5th in the Eredivisie, Ajax hope to secure his services to improve their prospects in the second half of the season.
Henderson’s wage demands are a key stumbling block to getting the deal over the line. His current earnings are five times what the top earner at Ajax takes home. Whether he’ll be open to reducing his wage expectations to get the deal done remains to be seen.
