Saudi Pro League Sides Looking To Sign Former Manchester United Defender Chris Smalling From AS Roma
With ten games left to the end of the Saudi Pro League 2023/24 season, clubs are planning for the new season. One such name being considered is Chris Smalling, who currently plays for AS Roma in Serie A.
The former Manchester United defender has enjoyed his time in Rome, making 111 appearances since joining on loan in the 2019/20 season before making the move permanent.
However, Smalling has been reduced to a fringe role this season due to injuries. He’s only made 6 league appearances after making 32 appearances last season. With next season being the start of the new format of UEFA competition, Smalling may be looking at options outside Europe with a less demanding schedule that would reduce the pressure on his aging body.
Italian media report that with his contract running out in 2025, Roma will be looking to get his wages off their books, given their financial struggles and the player’s recent injury record. With Smalling available at an affordable fee, Saudi sides will be keen to sign a player with a stellar record, leadership qualities, and a huge dressing-room presence.
