Karim Benzema Cannot Catch a Break as Injuries and an Inconsistent Al-Ittihad Season Mar His Introduction to the Saudi Pro League
The signing of Karim Benzema in the summer was greeted with much fanfare as a real coup for the Saudi Pro League and Al-Ittihad for getting one of the most accomplished strikers in world football.
Hopes were quickly pinned in the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner to fire Al-Ittihad to a title challenge in the SPL. However, form issues and a change of manager, coupled with injury issues, have marred a once-promising start to this season by the Frenchman.
Karim Benzema was primed to kickstart his season with Al-Ittihad under new manager Gallardo; however, the striker has suffered an injury that has set him back. Although the injury is not serious, it is another chance lost, denying the former Real Madrid striker the momentum he needs in the Pro League.
The latest injury issue came in Al-Ittihad’s 4-2 against Al-Khaleej. A tearful Benzema was forced off the pitch after 32 minutes, soon after doubling his side’s lead from the penalty spot.
The good news for Al-Ittihad and Benzema is that he will be out for only around 10 days. However, his recovery schedule runs right into December 12, when Al-Ittihad is expected to play the first-round Club World Cup match against Auckland City, jeopardizing his participation in this crucial match.
