AS Roma Encounter Stumbling Block to Offloading Chris Smalling to a Saudi Pro League Side: Chris Smalling

Having excluded him from their plans beyond this summer, AS Roma have been actively engaged with several unnamed Saudi Pro League sides for the transfer of Chris Smalling. The Giallorossi are hoping to seal the deal and use the proceeds from the transfer to sign a younger defender for significantly lower wages.

However, the Englishman has reportedly told his representatives that he is not keen on moving to Saudi Arabia. Smalling, 34, has had some misfortunes in the just-ended 2023-24 season, with injuries keeping him out of action for most of the season.

Roma may have to contend with keeping Smalling at the club until his contract expires next summer. The club’s and player’s representatives have had trouble finding suitors in Europe, with most clubs worried about his injury record and high wage demands.

There is still plenty of time left in this summer’s transfer window, so the Saudi Pro League door is not completely closed for Smalling should he change his mind about the league. For now, SPL sides interested in him may have to look at alternatives to ensure they bolster their squads in time for the new season.
